The richly decorated town hall and the picturesque Rue du Bourg, lined with historic buildings including the parish church of Sainte-Catherine, form the heart of the town.
Many artists have been attracted by the location and cultural capital of the city. The best known of these was Rainer Maria Rilke, who loved the city and its assets so much that he made it his home from 1921 until his death in 1926. A museum is dedicated to this German writer.
The area around Sierre is one of the most important wine-growing regions in Switzerland. Fendant, made from the white Chasselas grape, is one of the most famous ambassadors of the Valais. Its equivalent among the red wines is Dôle, made mostly from pinot noir. The wine trail linking the two sites of the Valais Vine and Wine Museum provides visitors with detailed information on the region's fine wines.
For an evening's journey to the source of our authentic flavours, the Restaurant et Oenothèque du Château de Villa in Sierre is the ideal place. The wine library includes more than 102 Valaisan wine producers, with a choice of 640 different wines! The restaurant is the place to go to taste the Valais Raclette and other flavours of our region.
