Historical background of the property and its surroundings:
Château d’Hellebecq:
This 19th century residence, more like a farm-castle, was dubbed a “château” by the
people of the region to give it greater prominence. But, more than its rural activity,
its fame comes from its various owners. In 1866, the farm was acquired by
Erasme-Désiré Bouvez, farmer and Mayor of Hellebecq.
It was at this time (Château d’Hellebecq) that the estate became known as
the name Château Bouvez – after its occupant. His brother-in-law, the general
Fernand Hellin, seriously wounded during the First World War and awarded for his bravery,
his acts of bravery with the highest military honors, came to end his days there in 1940. He is
buried at the foot of the church of Hellebecq.
The environment:
The National Road 7 is a road connecting Brussels to Lille via Tournai. Its length
is about 80 kilometers.
The nearest city is Ath. Ath is located 60 km west of the capital Brussels, 65 km north of the city of Mons and 100 km east of the city of Lille in France.
east of Lille, 27km east of Tournai and 23km north of Mons. The proximity of the motorway
A8 and national roads and the presence of a high-traffic railway station make it a
regional traffic hub.
At the confluence of the two Dendre rivers, Ath, whose past is rich and whose folklore is exceptional, is
capital of the green country. It is the city of giants. The ducasse that takes place on the fourth
August, has been recognized since 2005 as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
